Before buying any liquor, consider a number of questions that may help you determine quantities. Where will the function be held? Cocktail parties and wedding showers are typically held at home. This means the cost of all refreshments will be the responsibility of the host or hostess. Rehearsal dinners and weddings receptions are usually held at a hotel or private club. If a cash bar were set up by the facility, your primary liquor would be foir wines used during dinner, and for a toast to the bride and groom. Will the gathering be formal or relaxed? A formal affair has a reduced pace which translates to a slower consumption rate. A relaxed atmosphere will have more life and encourage consumption. How long will it last? The longer the event the more you’ll have to buy. How many guests do you expect> A larger group will consume more than a smaller group (obviously). What’s the average age of your guests? A younger group will consume more than an older group.
Unfortunately, there’s no secret formula when it comes to making large liquor purchases. The best way to determine quantity is to divide bottle size by glass size. The approximate average will tell you how many glasses you’ll expect to get from each bottle. The average wine serving is 4 oz., with a mixed drink consisting of 1-1/2 oz of spirits. For private functions plan on at least three to four drinks per person.
The best way is to try and keep it simple. Serve only a couple of types of beer and a couple of types of wine. Most people will drink what you ave on hand if it is the basics. Also buy what you like because you will probably have leftovers.
Try to prevent your guests from overindulging. Remember you are liable for any guest leaving your home intoxicated! If someone gets out of control, PLEASE DON’T LET THEM DRIVE!!!
Hiring a bartender is the best way to go but we all know this is usually hard to do. So here are some helpful hints to keep the party fun and memorable. Measure liquor in mixed drinks; don’t just pour freely. Pour one-ounce shots instead of 1 -1/2 ounce shots. Offer drinks with a lower alcohol content, such as light beers and wine spritzers. Serve food at your party,a full stomach means slower consumption of alcohol. Have a selection of nonalcoholic drinks and serve them in an attractive way; for example, mix cranberry jice with mineral water and serve in a wine glass. Move the bar out of the party room and into a less accessible room. Get everyone dancing, or try out a new party game – your guests will drink less if they are engaged in some kind of activity. Use a bartender, not a self-serve bar.
